Spotify users are about to have a new high-quality way to listen to music.

At its “Stream On” event, the music streaming company announced that it is now offering users higher quality music sound with the launch of Spotify HiFi.

“Spotify HiFi will deliver music in CD-quality, lossless audio format to your device and Spotify Connect-enabled speakers, which means fans will be able to experience more depth and clarity while enjoying their favorite tracks,” said the company in a press release.

According to the company, higher quality music streaming is one of the most requested new features by users, and the company is now making that happen. However, the sound upgrade will only be available to Spotify Premium members in select markets.

The company announced that it is “working with some of the world’s biggest speaker manufacturers” to bring Spotify HiFi to more users. The company will use the Spotify Connect feature to allow more speakers and devices to stream through the HiFi option.

Spotify previously tested higher quality streaming, but this is the company’s first time launching the feature to a major market. The current streaming quality for Spotify tops out at 320kbps audio, and the company has yet to say what quality limit will be under the HiFi service.

The company has yet to announce the service’s price and if it will cost users more than the standard Spotify Premium plans, which start at $9.99 a month.

“HiFi will be coupled with Spotify’s seamless user experience, building on our commitment to make sure users can listen to the music they love in the way they want to enjoy it,” said the company.

In the streaming world, Spotify is lagging behind its competitors for high-quality audio options. Tidal, Qobuz, Deezer, and Amazon all already offer their users lossless streaming. Spotify is the world’s largest streaming service, so the upgrade to sound quality is long overdue.

Amazon started offering lossless streaming in 2019 through Amazon Music HD. Amazon’s Music HD costs customers $14.99 per month or $12.99 for existing Prime customers, which is a premium cost on top of the Amazon Music Unlimited service.

Tidal music has supported high-resolution audio since the company’s launch in 2015 under Jay-Z’s leadership. Tidal’s HiFi offering is priced at $19.99 monthly, one of the most expensive streaming services. The audio quality for Tidal’s premium service known as “Tidal Masters” has audio quality that can exceed high-resolution 96 kHz / 24-bit audio.

“High-quality audio means just more info. There’s just things you will not hear if you don’t have a good sound system. It is really important cause we make music that wants to be heard the way that it was made,” said artist Billie Eilish in the promo video put out by Spotify for HiFi.
